The Wives of George Kornegay

There has been much speculation on the two wives of George Kornegay.  Legend has it that his first wife was Mary Fisher but in reality, there are no court records, wills, estates or other primary source documents proving her identity.  Within the descendants of George Kornegay, there are several males with Fisher as their middle name: George Fisher Kornegay (2), Joseph Fisher Kornegay, and Daniel Fisher Kornegay and these names hint that there may have been a person in their past with Fisher as the part of their name.

George Kornegay’s will of November, 1773 indicates that his unnamed first wife bore seven sons and one daughter, while naming his second wife (Susannah) as having borne his two youngest sons, Daniel and Elijah.  Susannah Harrold had been previously married to Samuel McCubbins and after Samuel’s death, married George Kornegay.  After George’s death, Susannah married Charles Stevenson around 1774.  In a Jones County, NC, deed, reference is made to Daniel and Elijah (Kornegay) and their interest in the “Maidens lands” of their mother Susanna Stevenson (Fagg 1991).
