Pencil Sketch of George Kornegay

This is a pencil sketch of George Kornegay (b. ca. 1704, d. 1773) drawn by his granddaughter Ann Civil Kornegay (b. ca. 1759, d. ca. 1839).  Ann was the daughter of George’s son Jacob (b. ca. 1732, d. ca. 1796).  The sketch is dated 1776, three years after George’s death.  It may have been drawn from Ann’s memory or from a previous sketch.  It was found in a prayer book belonging to John Flowers (b. 1755, d.1812), the second husband of Ann Civil Kornegay.  The sketch is among papers of John Baxton Flowers III archived at East Carolina University’s Joyner Library manuscript collection.  Analysis of the paper on which the sketch was drawn dates to the period 1750-1810 and most likely between 1760 and 1780.
